Unbepissed In Apricity

Thanks to the magic of the Oxford English Dictionary (and people who write about dictionaries) I know that I am experiencing apricity this morning.

Apricity means winter sunlight, and it is streaming through my window, warming me (I'm writing in a tee-shirt) and making it hard to see the computer screen. What a very useful word to know.

Another, far less useful, word in the OED is unbepissed. It means 'not being urinated on'. It describes me accurately. But I'm not sure why anybody needed to invent a word for it.

August Bank Holiday

Grandma's got new dentures
To eat the crust on pizza
Been taken out by her daughter
Because she thought she oughter
The kids are eating snickers
Because they're so delicious
Then there's sticky fingers
And mother loses her knickers

Bank holiday comes six times a year
Days of enjoyment to which everyone cheers
Bank holiday comes with a six pack of beer
....then its back to work A.G.A.I.N.

Bar-b-que is cooking
Sausages and chicken
The patio is buzzing
The neighbours they are looking
John is down the fun pub
Drinking lots of lager
Girls and boys are on the game
And all the high streets look the same

Bank holiday comes six times a year
Days of enjoyment to which everyone cheers
Bank holiday comes with a six pack of beer
....then its back to work A.G.A.I.N.

Smile Like You Mean It

What do you say when someone points a camera at you?
Do you say "cheese?"

This is Norman Parkinson, the famous fashion photographer. He didn`t like people saying "cheese" when he was taking their picture. He used to ask them to say
"lesbians"
I don't know why, but he's the genius, not me. He won all the awards, he did lots of Vogue covers, and Pirelli calendars, and advertising for the Conversative Party (don't ask, don't tell). So let's see how that works in practice, shall we? You can join in at home, if you have a camera.

If you think this is a reference
to the Blues Brothers,
you really need to get Sky.

Here is a picture of a young Audrey Hepburn,
saying "lesbians" to a pony.

As is often the case in these pictures,
the pony really doesn't seem motivated.

This couple are running towards the camera, saying "lesbians" out loud. How happy they look!

A two girl scene from Swinging London, 1963.
It's not just the paint that's wet...

Here is David Bowie, in a portrait by Parkinson.
Is he saying "lesbians" under his breath? Or is he far too cool?
Or is he just completely off his tits on coke?

Jerry Hall saying "lesbians" under a monument to David Niven, the father of Russian communism.

Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. What lovely smiles they both have. But it would be improper to ask.

"The life of a world famous fashion photographer would appeal to many. But Norman Parkinson knew that without sausages, it was all meaningless.''

Melting Point

"Melt down over
women
and gays"

I thought it was a recipe involving chocolate...
(possibly a suggestion for using up leftover Easter eggs)

But in fact.... it was a newspaper headline in The Times today,
about the current state of the Church of England.

Get Britain Breast Feeding

It's International Midwives' Day today, which gives me a good reason to blog about three things dear to my heart - women, babies, and breasts.

The charity Best Beginnings wanted to do something about the image breastfeeding has in the UK. For some reason, despite the fact that images of women's breasts are everywhere , the knowledge that you can also pop one into a baby's mouth and give it a healthy meal is somehow seen as a bit meh.

Less than 2 per cent of British babies are exclusively breastfed at six months, which is what the World Health Organisation recommends for all babies. Young mothers (20 and under) are particularly reluctant to feed. The winning poster campaign by two students at Central St. Martins celebrates 'cool, multitasking breasts' and emphasises that breastfeeding enhances intimacy and emotional bonding between a woman and her baby, and a woman and her partner.

A Subaltern's Love Song

Miss J. Hunter Dunn, Miss J. Hunter Dunn,
Furnish'd and burnish'd by Aldershot sun,
What strenuous singles we played after tea,
We in the tournament - you against me!

Love-thirty, love-forty, oh! weakness of joy,
The speed of a swallow, the grace of a boy,
With carefullest carelessness, gaily you won,
I am weak from your loveliness, Joan Hunter Dunn.

Miss Joan Hunter Dunn, Miss Joan Hunter Dunn,
How mad I am, sad I am, glad that you won,
The warm-handled racket is back in its press,
But my shock-headed victor, she loves me no less.

Her father's euonymus shines as we walk,
And swing past the summer-house, buried in talk,
And cool the verandah that welcomes us in
To the six-o'clock news and a lime-juice and gin.

The scent of the conifers, sound of the bath,
The view from my bedroom of moss-dappled path,
As I struggle with double-end evening tie,
For we dance at the Golf Club, my victor and I.

On the floor of her bedroom lie blazer and shorts,
And the cream-coloured walls are be-trophied with sports,
And westering, questioning settles the sun,
On your low-leaded window, Miss Joan Hunter Dunn.

The Hillman is waiting, the light's in the hall,
The pictures of Egypt are bright on the wall,
My sweet, I am standing beside the oak stair
And there on the landing's the light on your hair.

By roads "not adopted", by woodlanded ways,
She drove to the club in the late summer haze,
Into nine-o'clock Camberley, heavy with bells
And mushroomy, pine-woody, evergreen smells.

Miss Joan Hunter Dunn, Miss Joan Hunter Dunn,
I can hear from the car park the dance has begun,
Oh! Surrey twilight! importunate band!
Oh! strongly adorable tennis-girl's hand!

Around us are Rovers and Austins afar,
Above us the intimate roof of the car,
And here on my right is the girl of my choice,
With the tilt of her nose and the chime of her voice.

And the scent of her wrap, and the words never said,
And the ominous, ominous dancing ahead.
We sat in the car park till twenty to one
And now I'm engaged to Miss Joan Hunter Dunn.

It Was Ten Years Ago Today

Blogging is ten years old today.

According to Wikipedia, the term "weblog" was invented by Jorn Barger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorn_Barger) on 17 December 1997.

The short form, "blog," was coined by Peter Merholz, who jokingly broke the word weblog into the phrase we blog in the sidebar of his blog Peterme.com in April or May of 1999. Over 100 million people now blog.

People who know tell me that the proper gifts for a tenth anniversary of a relationship are:

  1. Anything silver or blue.
  2. Any gifts that are tin or aluminum. (The pliability of tin and aluminum is a symbol of how a successful marriage needs to be flexible and durable and how it can be bent without being broken. )
  3. Daffodils. Trumpet-shaped daffodils represent joy, cheerfulness, and happiness

Happy anniversary to all of you - especially Stowe Boyd for telling me the good news, and Jorn Barger, whereever he is - and thanks for all the gifts you give by blogging.

Hot Vimto

It was a winter drink, from a Lancashire childhood. When the winter made clouds of our breath, we went to a cafe called Brucciani's, and drank hot Vimto. It was a simple pleasure. This is a blog about simple pleasures, and complicated stuff, too.
