Perls of Wisdom

It was twenty years ago today ... Larry Wall released the first version of the Perl programming language. I know, I know, it's not very interesting. I'll try harder.

Happenings Ten Years Time Ago

Meeting people along my way,
Seemingly alone one day,
But the reality of things,
That my dreaming always brings.

Happenings ten years time ago,
Situations we really know,
But the knowing is in the mind,
Sinking deep into the whirl of time.
Sinking deep into the whirl of time.

Walking in the room I see,
Things that mean a lot to me.
Why they do I never know,
Memories don't strike me so.
Memories don't strike me so.

It seems to me I've been here before,
The sounds I heard, and the sights I saw.
Was it real, was it in my dreams?
I need to know what it all means.
Happenings ten years time ago,
Situations we really know,
But the knowing is in the mind,
Sinking deep into the whirl of time.
Sinking deep into the whirl of time.

It Was Ten Years Ago Today

Blogging is ten years old today.

According to Wikipedia, the term "weblog" was invented by Jorn Barger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorn_Barger) on 17 December 1997.

The short form, "blog," was coined by Peter Merholz, who jokingly broke the word weblog into the phrase we blog in the sidebar of his blog Peterme.com in April or May of 1999. Over 100 million people now blog.

People who know tell me that the proper gifts for a tenth anniversary of a relationship are:

  1. Anything silver or blue.
  2. Any gifts that are tin or aluminum. (The pliability of tin and aluminum is a symbol of how a successful marriage needs to be flexible and durable and how it can be bent without being broken. )
  3. Daffodils. Trumpet-shaped daffodils represent joy, cheerfulness, and happiness

Happy anniversary to all of you - especially Stowe Boyd for telling me the good news, and Jorn Barger, whereever he is - and thanks for all the gifts you give by blogging.

Hot Vimto

It was a winter drink, from a Lancashire childhood. When the winter made clouds of our breath, we went to a cafe called Brucciani's, and drank hot Vimto. It was a simple pleasure. This is a blog about simple pleasures, and complicated stuff, too.
